Diabetes in Older Adults and Complex Cases

Individualized treatment planning that considers other medical conditions, medication safety, risk of hypoglycaemia, functional status, and the patient’s overall health and quality of life.

Frequently Asked Questions About Diabetes

Clear answers to common questions about insulin dosage, diet, and chamber consultations.

1. Is insulin therapy required for life once started for diabetes control?
For Type 2 Diabetes, blood glucose can often be stabilized through lifestyle modifications, weight loss, and modern oral medications, allowing insulin dosage to be tapered under medical supervision. However, for Type 1 Diabetes and Gestational Diabetes (pregnancy), insulin remains essential as advised by Dr. Rajib Deb Nath.
2. What immediate action should be taken during a sudden low blood sugar event (Hypoglycemia)?
If your blood sugar drops below 4.0 mmol/L or you experience sweating, tremors, or confusion, immediately follow the 15-15 Rule: consume 15 grams of fast-acting carbohydrates (such as 3-4 glucose biscuits or half a glass of fruit juice), wait 15 minutes, and re-check your blood glucose level.
3. What medical reports should I bring for my first chamber appointment?
Please bring all recent prescriptions from the last 3 months, your latest Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) and 2-Hour Post Breakfast (2h ABF) readings, your most recent HbA1c test report, and Kidney Function (Serum Creatinine) test results for an effective consultation.
4. How often should HbA1c and diabetic complication screenings be performed?
HbA1c tests should ideally be performed every 3 to 6 months to monitor long-term blood sugar stability. Comprehensive organ screenings—including Diabetic Nephropathy (Kidneys), Retinopathy (Eyes), and Foot Examinations—are recommended annually.
